Fall is officially here and that means it’s apple picking time! This year we decided to change up our tradition a bit by visiting a new farm. Hurds Family Farm is located in Modena, NY about an hour and 30 minutes from NYC. It was a little less than an hour for us and we are in Jersey, but we are used to making a day of our tradition and love going to upstate NY for the best apple picking.
There are so many options to choose from at Hurds Family Farm. There are group visit options, pre-order online for easy pick up on arrival and special fall activities pricing!
As soon as we arrived we noticed everything was a short walking distance to the main hub which is the Dutch Barn Market and where customer service is located. It’s where you can purchase all kinds of activity bundles like pick your own apples and the activity wristbands. There are all kinds of activities aside from the apple picking like corn mazes, apple launcher, hayride, and cow train.
Sarah’s favorite was the American Ninja warrior like, Wild Apple Obstacle course and the Giant Slide!
We took a short hayride to where we could begin our apple picking but first we braved the corn maze. There was a mini scavenger hunt to complete within the Mega Corn Maze that were fun photo opps and we completed each one with the help of Dad who only got us lost once!
After that, we began apple picking which is our favorite part. Apple picking is important to us for many reasons. It was something we did with my brother always and although it is sometimes hard to continue family traditions after loss, even as time passes, its an important way to keep that special person’s memory alive. At first we were skeptical about even trying a different farm but we all had so much fun enjoying making new memories that we didn’t feel as bad.
The hubs loves helping the kids and showing them the differences in the types of apples. The kids just enjoy eating the different apples and tasting the difference between the sweet and sour ones.
We couldn’t believe how tired we were. As much fun as we were having it was time to go home. We stopped by the barn and picked up some apple cider and delicious apple cider donuts. I recommend, if weather permits, to try the apple cider slushy…so good!
Do you go apple picking with your family? What are some other traditions you have?
I highly recommend a visit to Hurds Family Farm because there is definitely something fun for everyone.
